Imam Omar Suleiman wasn’t yet an imam when Katri Imam Omar Suleiman wasn’t yet an imam when Katrina struck, just a young man surrounded by families who had lost everything.

“People wanted to walk me through every room of their homes that had been destroyed. What they needed most was to know they could rebuild, that they weren’t alone.”

That experience taught him empathy. And it became the heartbeat of ICNA Relief’s mission.

For 20 years, our teams have carried out the same promise: to be present, to serve with compassion, and to remind families they are never forgotten in their darkest hour.

“Katrina was dirty work,” Imam Omar Suleiman r “Katrina was dirty work,” Imam Omar Suleiman recalls. “We were gutting homes years later… mold, floodwater, even animals jumping out at you. It was nasty.” He said.

But amidst the struggle, a deeper truth emerged: that true leadership is forged in service.

“Leaders aren’t made on podiums or social media. They’re made in the dirt, standing with people in their pain.”

Katrina left that mark on a generation. And for 20 years, ICNA Relief has carried it forward, serving in disasters across America, proving that true leadership begins on the ground.

“There’s no such thing as leadership without s “There’s no such thing as leadership without service,” Imam Omar Suleiman reflects. “The Prophet ﷺ served in the trenches, covered in dirt alongside his people. Leadership isn’t on the podium…it’s in the mud.”

That lesson carried forward from Hurricane Katrina. It shaped the values of ICNA Relief: that true leadership means being present with families in crisis.

Two decades later, that commitment hasn’t wavered. Every deployment, every disaster, every family comforted demonstrates that ICNA Relief’s story is one of serving with compassion, commitment, and faith.

New Orleans wasn’t just underwater, it was drown New Orleans wasn’t just underwater, it was drowning in memories: shoes, toys, photographs floating with the debris during Hurricane Katrina. But in the midst of devastation, ICNA Relief’s teams demonstrated the spirit of service.

“Muslims were very present in Katrina,” Imam Omar Suleiman recalls. “ICNA Relief was there, and it changed the way New Orleans saw Muslims.”

Hurricane Katrina revealed Muslims not only as neighbors, but as servants of society.

The legacy that started in New Orleans has carried on for two decades. ICNA Relief has been on the ground more than 100 times, bringing comfort, compassion, and hope to families in need.

Driving into New Orleans with a FEMA badge while v Driving into New Orleans with a FEMA badge while volunteering with ICNA Relief at the time of Hurricane Katrina, Omar Suleiman saw devastation like never before.

“The stench of death hit miles before the city. Flooded graveyards, floating caskets… it looked like the Day of Judgment. It looked like it got bombed,” he recalls.

In the middle of that chaos, Muslims stood up, offering comfort and relief when it was needed most.

ICNA Relief's mission of service has continued for 2 decades, a commitment to stand with families when hope feels lost.
