ICNA Relief DRS Team Responds to Tropical Storm Alberto
DonateTropical Storm Alberto, the first storm of the 2024 hurricane season, is causing significant flooding in Southern Texas, especially in the Corpus Christi area. The hurricane season, which began on June 1 and continues through November 30, has already seen severe impacts. In response, the Governor of Texas has declared a severe weather disaster due to the extensive flooding. Storm surges have reached heights of over 4 feet, with an expected rainfall total of 5 to 10 inches. Active flood warnings are currently in place, leading to potential widespread flooding and posing risks to property and safety. Residents are urged to follow local advisories and take necessary precautions.
Our Disaster Relief Services (DRS) team is actively engaged, closely monitoring the situation, and coordinating with the Texas Gulf Coast VOAD to provide timely support and assistance. Additionally, we are keeping a watchful eye on a system in the Southwest Atlantic, off the coast of Florida and Georgia. While still classified as a disturbance, our teams are prepared to be deployed if necessary.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected. Stay safe and stay tuned for further updates as we continue to support our communities and ensure safety. Weathering the Storms - Disaster Relief Services Preparedness
As hurricane season continues, ensuring your family’s safety becomes paramount. Preparedness is key to saving lives, expediting recovery, and minimizing the impact on communities. Although you can’t prevent a tropical storm, taking proactive steps can protect you and your family. Remember, hurricanes can cause destruction and flooding, even inland and away from coastal areas. At ICNA Relief, we want to ensure you and your families are well prepared. Here are essential tips to prepare for Hurricane Season:
- Stay Informed: Stay updated with weather alerts and official warnings from local authorities, as well as information from major news outlets and weather agencies.
- Create a Family Plan: Develop an emergency plan with your family, including an evacuation strategy and a designated meeting place in the time of an emergency.
- Prepare an Emergency Kit: Assemble a disaster supply kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, medications, first-aid supplies, flashlights, and batteries.
- Secure Your Home: Take proactive measures to reinforce windows and doors, and secure outdoor objects that may become projectiles during strong winds.
- Know Evacuation Routes: Familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes thoroughly and have a thought out plan for relocating to a safe area if necessary.
- Establish Communication: Ensure all family members can communicate during emergencies, including alternative methods if traditional lines are down.
- Protect Important Documents: Safeguard critical documents like identification, insurance papers, and essential medical records in a waterproof container.
- Financial Readiness: Have enough cash on hand, as ATMs, banks, and card payment systems may experience disruptions or be inaccessible during disasters.
- Assist the Vulnerable: Check on elderly or disabled neighbors in your community and offer assistance to those who may need extra help during emergencies.
- Exercise Post-Storm Caution: Prioritize remaining indoors even after the storm has passed and make sure to wait for authorities to declare it safe to go outside.
Remember, taking proactive measures and being prepared can make all the difference during hurricane season. Act now to protect yourself and your loved ones!
