The Mental and Spiritual Benefits of Giving Back:

A Muslim Perspective

Too often, the stress of what’s happening around us can leave us feeling helpless. We scroll past headlines about disasters, violence, and poverty, and it’s hard not to feel the weight of it all. But giving back and supporting causes is one of the best ways we can push back against that feeling and take action.

Even beyond the impact it has for others, it does something within us. Research shows that when we give to others, our brains release neurochemicals that improve mood, lower stress, and make us feel more connected. The act of helping can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression while reinforcing a sense of purpose.

But for Muslims, science confirms what faith already teaches. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever relieves a believer’s distress, Allah will relieve his distress on the Day of Judgment.” (Muslim)

This powerful hadith reminds us that lifting someone else’s burden is not only a path to spiritual reward, but it’s a source of relief for our hearts too. Giving becomes a means of healing, both inwardly and outwardly.

When you give for the sake of Allah, whether through Zakat, Sadaqah, or simple service, you’re not just helping someone else. You’re actively drawing closer to your Creator. You’re finding tranquility (sakinah) in acts that carry both immediate emotional relief and eternal reward.

And that feeling of connection isn’t just spiritual, it’s practical. Volunteering with your local food pantry or donating to help a refugee family gives you meaning and the knowledge that you are making a difference, especially when life feels uncertain.

At ICNA Relief, we see this every day. In our donors, in our volunteers, we witness firsthand how giving transforms lives, on both sides, all across the U.S.

So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck, consider giving. Not because you have to, but because you can. And because in doing so, you may just find a little more healing than you expected.
