Why We Must Bridge the Gap
for Underserved Youth

Across the United States, many young people face limited access to the basic resources that support their development. These limitations create barriers that shape how youth experience the world around them.

ICNA Relief’s Back2School campaign is one of several efforts aimed at addressing these gaps for students. Through partnerships with local leaders, masjids, schools, and volunteers, ICNA Relief connects national resources with neighborhood needs.

This work is not just about short-term support. It is a commitment to ensuring that youth aren’t left behind due to circumstances outside their control.

What “Underserved” Means in Practice

The term “underserved” applies to many different situations. It can describe families facing financial strain, households in areas with limited access to public services, or those navigating displacement and adjustment after resettlement.

In these contexts, even basic school preparation, like purchasing notebooks, backpacks, or calculators, can become a financial burden. These are not luxury items. They are the practical minimum for classroom participation.

Filling an Identified Gap

The Back2School campaign offers a range of supports to respond to different aspects of school readiness:

  • School Supply Drives: Community-led drives deliver new backpacks filled with grade-appropriate supplies, distributed in partnership with local schools and masjids.
  • Student Sponsorships: Financial support is provided to help families cover school-related expenses such as registration fees or uniforms.
  • Ambassadors Grant: Local organizers receive funding and logistical support to lead their own Back2School efforts.
  • Empower Grant: Teachers in underfunded classrooms receive resources to implement projects that improve student engagement and access.

These programs are not meant to replace school systems or public support. Instead, they fill identified gaps, particularly in communities where families are navigating hardship and where public services may be limited or overburdened.

Supporting Youth by Supporting Families

Though the program centers on students, it often reaches whole families. When a parent attends a backpack distribution, they may also learn about food assistance, health screenings, or mental health services offered nearby.

This interconnected model allows ICNA Relief to address immediate needs while building longer-term connections. The emphasis is not only on the student’s academic start but on the broader stability that supports their ability to learn.

The Importance of Returning Year After Year

The impact of this work comes not only from what is given, but from the consistency with which ICNA Relief returns. Families know the support will be there each year. That reliability builds trust and allows communities to plan for, and with, these services.

Since its launch, the Back2School campaign has distributed more than one million backpacks across the country. But it’s not the number that defines the program. It’s the ongoing presence. When support is reliable, families are more likely to engage, and students are more likely to begin school with confidence.

How to Get Involved

The Back2School campaign is built for wide participation. Whether you’re an individual, part of a masjid, or part of a community organization, there are ways to contribute:

✔️ Donate to sponsor a backpack or provide student support
✔️ Volunteer at a local distribution or packing event
✔️Organize a supply drive in your community
✔️ Apply for an Ambassadors Grant to lead a local initiative
✔️Share information with educators, youth leaders, or families who might benefit

Bridging the gap for underserved youth is about removing unnecessary obstacles, before they grow into larger inequalities. Each role plays a part in reducing the pressure underserved students face at the start of the year.

At ICNA Relief, we don’t promise to solve every challenge. What we offer is practical support, implemented with care, grounded in faith, and led by communities themselves.
