Kafalah Committee

Upholding the Sunnah of Care

Inspired by the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ practice of Kafalah, FATE’s Kafalah Committees bring the responsibility of caring for vulnerable children back to the heart of our communities. These masjid-based committees mobilize local volunteers to support Muslim foster children, biological families in crisis, and foster families, ensuring no child is left without community, care, or connection.

What is a Kafalah Committee?

A Kafalah Committee is a dedicated group established at a masjid to support foster children, foster families, and biological families in need. Working in partnership with FATE, these committees become hubs of compassion and care in local communities. FATE encourages every masjid to establish a committee that:

  • Supports foster children and families
  • Organizes awareness events and donation drives
  • Builds a sustainable, faith-based network of care

Why It Matters:

Children in foster care often lose not only their homes, but their connection to faith, culture, and community. When a masjid becomes a Kafalah Committee, it becomes a place of stability, belonging, and advocacy for those children and their families.
This model allows Muslim communities to:

  • Show up for children at their most vulnerable moments 
  • Support reunification and family stability
  • Increase culturally responsive foster and CASA involvement
  • Live the values of mercy, responsibility, and service

Goal: FATE’s goal is to help masjids across the United States establish Kafalah Committees so that every Muslim child in foster care has access to a caring, connected community,  no matter where they live.

 Each masjid establishes a small team of volunteers to lead local efforts. FATE provides training, materials, and guidance to help the committee get started.

Launch and Serve

Once established, committees host awareness sessions, organize donation drives, and connect with local child welfare agencies. FATE continues to offer mentorship and support for long-term success.
