Integrated Nutrition and Screening Program for Informed Risk Education for Diabetes Prevention

Our Vision:

To lower diabetes rates in underserved Hispanic communities by offering culturally sensitive healthcare and empowering individuals with knowledge and resources to lead healthier lives.

Project Goals:

The INSPIRE-D project seeks to address two key Social Determinants of Health (SDOH):

  1. Limited nutrition education
  2. Insufficient access to quality healthcare

Our goal is to empower individuals to understand and utilize information learned regarding health and nutrition, ultimately striving to reduce the incidence of new diabetes cases in our community.

Three Objectives:

Community Health Assessment

Early Risk Detection and Self Managment Education

Enhancing Nutrition Literacy and Access to Healthy Foods

Diabetes in South Carolina

In the United States, about 1 in 3 adults has prediabetes, and more than 8 in 10 of them don’t know they have it.

Where do we rank?

South Carolina has the 8th highest rate of adults living with diabetes in the United States

What is the toll?

Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the state of South Carolina, surpassing drug overdoses, suicides, and homicides.

How has this issue grown?

In less than 10 years, the prevalence of diabetes has climbed from 12.1% to 13.6%

What about pre-diabetes?

Cases of prediabetes in South Carolina have surged from 6.7% to 10.9% in recent years.

What can I do about it?

Good news! Pre-diabetes is completely reversible with lifestyle changes including healthy eating, regular exercise, and stress management.

Take the quiz below to find out if you are at risk and get connected to resources that can get you started!

Could you be at risk for Pre-Diabetes?

Having prediabetes means your blood glucose (sugar) levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes. Prediabetes can often be reversed.
