Survivor Stories of Shifa Patients

Encouragment to get mamogram from my provider and  the support I received from Shifa Clinic – South Carolina and Roper Saint Francis was incredible. Today, I am a proud survivor and advocate for early detection.”

Alma Amador

Breast Cancer Survivor

In 2022, during my diabetes follow-up, Hailey, my provider, recommended that I get a mammogram since I had turned forty. Even though I had no symptoms, the mammogram detected some abnormalities, which led to a biopsy. The biopsy showed I had stage 1 cancer, and I was referred to Roper St. Francis for follow-up treatment. At Roper, I filled out forms to make sure I wouldn’t have expenses I couldn’t afford. After the biopsy, they did another procedure to check if the lymph node was involved. Thankfully, it was not, so I underwent radiation therapy as a preventive measure.
I now take a pill treatment every 3 months for 5 years and visit my oncologist every 6 months. Without a doubt, getting that mammogram helped me take the steps needed to control the cancer.

The free mammogram  at Shifa Clinic was a lifesaver. It detected my cancer early, and now I am in remission. I encourage every woman to take advantage of these services.”

Vilma Alvarado

Breast Cancer patient under treatment

In March 2019, I got pregnant and looked for prenatal care. I found the clinic online; I called and filled out the application to give me prenatal care; all are very well, and excellent.

10 months after delivery I had a breast mass . I went to other clinics and they told me not to worry and it is due to me breast feeding. I came back to Shifa Clinic and they helped with breast cancer screening, and I came out positive. They have helped  a lot and guided me to receive the best treatment for this disease. I can only say thank you for your excellent medical services and that people must continue to support this institution.

My advice to all women is to listen to your body and never ignore any signs, no matter how small they may seem. Getting a mammogram can be a lifesaving step, as early detection is key to preventing more serious issues. A mammogram saved my life, and it could save yours too.

Maricella Jimenze

Breast Cancer Survivor

I had pain in my right breast and didn’t think much of it at first. But then the pain got worse, so I had a mammogram in 2017. At that time, I was going to the clinic in Mt. Pleasant, and Erin was treating me. She referred me to the MUSC Mobile Unit, where they found something suspicious on the mammogram and sent me for a biopsy. The diagnosis was that I had stage 0 preinvasive breast cancer, and the recommendation was to have a mastectomy as a preventive measure. MUSC helped me fill out the paperwork so I could receive the treatment at no cost since I couldn’t afford it.
