Disaster Relief
ICNA Relief USA represents Our Nation’s Muslim Response to disasters. ICNA Relief USA supports all phases of disaster: Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. Including mitigation, advocacy, and community resiliency for the whole-community. We assist in training and networking, planning and deployment, long term case management, and rebuilding better and resilient communities while also advocating for the benefit of those impacted by disaster.
ICNA Relief with local and National partners are assessing the damages caused by Hurricane Helene and communicating with local authorities to determine the damages sustained by the storm before sending our staff & volunteers to support the cleanup and recovery efforts.
Emergency crews rushed Friday to rescue people trapped in flooded homes after Helene roared ashore as a powerful Category 4 hurricane in Florida, generating a massive storm surge and knocking out power to 4 million customers in several states. At least six people were reported dead.
The storm made landfall late Thursday in a sparsely populated region with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph) in the rural Big Bend area, home to fishing villages and vacation hideaways where Florida’s Panhandle and peninsula meet. But the damage extended hundreds of miles to the north, with flooding as far away as North Carolina. One Georgia county was almost entirely without power.
Weathering the Storms – Disaster Relief Services Preparedness
As hurricane season continues, ensuring your family’s safety becomes paramount.
Preparedness is key to saving lives, expediting recovery, and minimizing the impact on communities. Although you can’t prevent a tropical storm, taking proactive steps can protect you and your family. Remember, hurricanes can cause destruction and flooding, even inland and away from coastal areas. At ICNA Relief, we want to ensure you and your families are well prepared. Here are essential tips to prepare for Hurricane Season:
- Stay Informed: Stay updated with weather alerts and official warnings from local authorities, as well as information from major news outlets and weather agencies.
- Create a Family Plan: Develop an emergency plan with your family, including an evacuation strategy and a designated meeting place in the time of an emergency.
- Prepare an Emergency Kit: Assemble a disaster supply kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, medications, first-aid supplies, flashlights, and batteries.
- Secure Your Home: Take proactive measures to reinforce windows and doors, and secure outdoor objects that may become projectiles during strong winds.
- Know Evacuation Routes: Familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes thoroughly and have a thought out plan for relocating to a safe area if necessary.
- Establish Communication: Ensure all family members can communicate during emergencies, including alternative methods if traditional lines are down.
- Protect Important Documents: Safeguard critical documents like identification, insurance papers, and essential medical records in a waterproof container.
- Financial Readiness: Have enough cash on hand, as ATMs, banks, and card payment systems may experience disruptions or be inaccessible during disasters.
- Assist the Vulnerable: Check on elderly or disabled neighbors in your community and offer assistance to those who may need extra help during emergencies.
- Exercise Post-Storm Caution: Prioritize remaining indoors even after the storm has passed and make sure to wait for authorities to declare it safe to go outside.
Remember, taking proactive measures and being prepared can make all the difference during hurricane season. Act now to protect yourself and your loved ones!
